A national survey conducted by the Ghana National Authority has revealed a fact which has shocked many Ghanan parents and educators: many middle school students are engaged in after- school gambling game activities.
The investigation, which was intended to find out how Ghanan children and adolescents spend their time after school, questioned several dozen pupils in the Sunyani Municipality. Many of the students who said that they participated in after- school gambling game activities, primarily the national lottery, were between 13 and 16 years of age and pupils of the Presbyterian Primary School in Sunyani, or of the Anglican School in Sunyani.
When questioned as to why gambling game play was their after- school activity of choice, many of the children said that they had been told to partake by their older brothers or friends.
An official of the Municipal Directorate of Education said that he was very worried about the proliferation of underage gambling game participation, and said that he was shocked that children so young were taking part. He said that he suspected that the parents and guardians of the children had set a negative example for the children by their own gambling game participation.
