In China, internet service providers have made a plea to “protect” users from “unhealthy content” such as internet pornography and gambling on the internet online. The providers vowed to work with government officials and other regulators to enforce the ban.

Internet News Service Work Committee under the Internet Society of China (ISC) in Haikou announced its new policy against internet pornography and gambling on the internet online at a meeting on Saturday. The meeting was held in the capital of the province that encompasses China’s southernmost island, Hainan.

Li Jiaming of the Internet Society of China said that his center had received 127,010 complaints from the public. Of those complaints, almost 70% had been about internet pornography and around 8% about gambling on the internet online.

The group announced plans to draw up regulatory procedures regarding how to contain gambling on the internet online and cyberspace pornography, and then set up a five- member assigned to the task. The expert group will also conduct public ethics education on the internet.

However, some attendees at Saturday meeting predicted that the attempted campaign would be fraught with difficulties because of the public’s reaction. The public, it is predicted, will not unanimously support efforts to eradicate gambling on the internet online.
